In today’s society slang is more than just a way to make complex communication simple, it is a statement, it is taking a stand against the man and showing inventiveness, even to some it has become an art. The notion of slang is well explained in the second section of the book Slang, written by Michael Adams; it reads, “…slang is all about fitting it. “Fitting in,” however, is not a lightweight notion; it is laden with linguistic, cultural, and political significance. While slang outlines social space, attitudes about slang partly construct group identity and identify individuals as members of groups. There is a lot at stake in slang, and all speakers of American English are stakeholders, to whatever extent slang figures in their speech” (Adams 57). Most often the words that are developed into slang are words that are mistaken or a miscommunication and then reapplied or implemented, jokingly at first, but soon become a replacement. If not that scenario then same idea only the word originates when someone on the more popular, influential side makes up a word and others mimic in order to fit in just as Mr. Adams theorized. Again, if neither of these scenarios is applicable, another way this phenomenon of slang is integrated into daily life and cultures is between just that, cultures. This amalgamation between ethnic groups is best explained by Scott F. Kiesling, associate professor and the chair of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh, as he notes, “the use of dude as an address term developed in the 1930’s and 1940’s from groups of men, ‘Urban Mexican-American pachuchos and African-American zoot-suiters’ … known for their clothes consciousness. These groups began to use dude as an in-group term, and is was soon used as a general term of address among men; dude followed a well-worn linguistic path from stigmatized groups such as urban African Americans and Mexicans to whites through African American music culture” (Kiesling 284). As cultures develop, implement, and being to excessively apply these slang terms to their communication habits it doesn’t take long at all until the trend spreads and the slang, like a contagious plague of Ebonics and euphemisms, is found everywhere and is noted changing language and culture as we know it.
